From the library of Alice Corbin Henderson, with her signature on the front endpaper. Alice Corbin Henderson [1881-1949] was an American poet and poetry editor and a friend of Rabindranath Tagore. She lived in New Mexico from 1916 and she and her husband were active in the movement for Native American civil rights.
Devendranath Tagore [1817- 1905] was a religious reformer and the founder in 1848 of the Brahmo Religion, which today is synonymous with Brahmoism, the youngest religion of India and Bangladesh. Silvanath Sastri in "History of the Brahmo Samaj" describes him as "one of the greatest religious geniuses this country ever produced....In spite of his real sainthood [he] never put on the garb or habits of sadhu or saint. His piety was natural, habitual and modest. He hated or shunned all display of saintliness...." Tagore had five daughters and five sons. His second son co-translated and wrote the introduction to the present work. His youngest son was the poet Rabindranath Tagore. First Edition.
