(New York): Scanlan's Monthly, 1970.. 1970.. Very good. - Small quarto [approximately 10-3/4 inches high by 8-1/4 inches wide], softcover bound in printed white self wraps. The wraps are slightly bumped & lightly soiled with light foxing around the edges. 132 pages. Illustrated in color and black & white. The top corners of the first few leaves are lightly bumped. Very good. Among the contents of the first issue of this intensely radical magazine is an article by Hunter S. Thompson "The Temptations of Jean-Claude Killy", a typical raucously eloquent account of an interview with the retired skier. The article is preceded by a letter to the Scanlan editors, explaining how "Playboy", who had assigned him the piece, refused to publish it and how he was now on their blacklist. Sol Stern contributes "Altamont: The Woodstock Nation's Pearl Harbor", illustrated with color photographs. "The Unfinished Life of Mickey Cohen" is a half-completed biography of Jewish gangster Mickey Cohen written by Ben Hecht in 1958-9 with an introduction by Sidney E. Zion describing how Hecht met Cohen when Cohen became interested in helping the Irgun get the British out of Palestine. Also of note is "The Short Outrageous Political History of Biafra" by Auberon Waugh. In the rear of the magazine is the four-page color comic strip, Installment 1 of Herge's "The Adventures of Tintin: Flight 714".
