- sc A 14-1/4 inch high by 11-1/8 inch wide gelatin silver print depicting the famous image of President Roosevelt's flag-draped coffin being carried and escorted into the White House by an honor guard, as the horse-drawn funeral carriage draws away. Two marines bearing flags stand at the lower left of the image under the leafy branches of the tree which frames the left side of the photograph. The tree's branches reach out towards the columns of the White House's entrance which frame the right side of the image, balancing the somber scene. There are some very light creases to the lower and upper left margin and the upper right margin. The photographer's credit "Life Photo by Thomas McAvoy" is stamped in blue on the verso together with the date "Apr 15 1945", and Life's copyright information boldly stamped in purple. A powerful photograph.

Together with Margaret Bourke-White, Peter Stackpole and Alfred Eisenstaedt, he was one of the first photographers to work for Life Magazine.
