In 1990, Matthiessen, Paul Winter and a group of Russian environmentalists traveled around Siberia's Lake Baikal, the world's oldest and deepest lake, containing one-fifth of the planet's fresh water. Winter accompanied Mathiessen at the invitation of Irkutsk TV, researching an album of music "to celebrate the natural beauty of Russia". Matthiessen chronicled the journey in diary form in his book "Baikal: Sacred Sea of Siberia".
In the same year, Paul Winter, founder of the Paul Winter Sextet and later the Paul Winter Consort, played the concert "1990: Voices of a Planet" in Times Square during New York's celebrations for the Twentieth Anniversary of Earth Day".
