1939.. 1939.. Very good. - sc The 7 inch high by 9 inch wide photograph depicts Alf Landon shaking hands with Col. Frank Knox. This is a vintage photograph distributed by the Associated Press Photos Company at the time, with the their stamp on the verso. The photograph is slightly creased at the corners. The text for a press release printed on a sheet of paper, once mounted to the verso is detached, though present.

The text for the press release which accompanies the image reads as follows: "ARRIVE FOR PARLEY. Former Governor Alf M. Landon (right) of Kansas, Republican Presidential candidate in 1936, and his running mate, Col. Frank Knox (left) of Chicago, were greeted by Rep. Joseph Martin, Jr., minority leader, on arrival in Washington, D.C., where the two Republicans are to participate in a White House conference on the neutrality program."

In the early days of Adolf Hitler's and the Nazi party's rise to power, President Franklin Roosevelt was able to apply a little bit of political Ju-Jitsu by invoking the Neutrality Act passed by isolationists to prevent arm shipments to the Fascists during the Spanish Civil War. But by 1939, this law which forbade not only selling arms to countries involved in war, but also prevented some non-military trades, would have prevented FDR from assisting the British when Nazi Germany initiated hostilities.
