- Over 50 words penned on 10 inch high by 8 inch wide cream paper. Eastman assures the recipient that he has "laid the matter" of the discharge of a young man from the navy "before the Secretary of the Navy" and that he'll respond once the Secretary has reached a decision but that "From what he said I doubt whether he will decide until he shall hear from the commander...." Signed "I.A. Eastman". Addressed on the verso of an attached leaf with a Washington, D.C. postmark and, quite uncommon, the intact red wax seal of the U.S. House of Representatives. Folded several times for mailing, the address leaf is slightly foxed or soiled with a small piece torn from the edge opposite the seal. The American manufacturer Ira Allen Eastman (1809-1881) served as a member of the New Hampshire House of Representatives and was elected to Congress as a Democrat in 1839, serving in the U.S. House of Representatives until 1843 as chairman of the United States House Committee on Revisal and Unfinished Business. After leaving Congress, Eastman served as associate justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1849 to 1855 and subsequently as justice of the New Hampshire Supreme Court from 1855 to 1859. He was unsuccessful in his bid to win office as Governor of the State and his subsequent attempt to seek office as a U.S. Senator. The intact period wax seal of the U.S. House of Representatives is uncommon.
