- Small octavo [approximately 6 inches high by 4 inches wide], green cloth decorated in blind, & titled in gilt on the spine. The binding is rubbed & bumped. The spine is slightly faded with the tail chipped & a piece out of the head. 222 pages. Illustrated in black & white with an engraved frontispiece & 5 woodcuts of churches. There is staining to the front pastedown & endpapers. The fore-edge & top edge are foxed & there is scattered foxing throughout. Good.
Second edition. The first edition was published in 1838.
In a printed note the anonymous author inscribes his book to "the Rector of St. Thomas' Church, New-York, the Historian, Scholar and Divine". There is a useful appendix in the back listing all of the places of worship in the city. The text includes historical and architectural details described in the form of a conversation between an uncle and his two nephews.
