- Folio, 13-1/4 inches high by 10 inches high. Printed buff self-wraps titled in black on the front cover. The spine of the toned, darkened and foxed covers has been reinforced with early tan paper. 5 & [1] pages, including the covers. There are several tears to the edges of the pages and covers, with some foxing and offsetting internally. First edition with Bryant's authorship indicated. This sheet music was inspired by President Abraham Lincoln's call for volunteers to fight in the Civil War. Later printings of the poem increase the number of troops called for from 300,000 to 600,000. [Ref. "Bibliography of American Literature" Vol. 1, page 346]: The BAL notes that the work is "Not by Bryant although frequently attributed to him. The author was James Sloan Gibbons (1810-1892). According to DAB [Dictionary of American Biography] the poem was first published in the New York Evening Post, July 16, 1862. It was inspired by Lincoln's call for 300,000 volunteers, and was issued in hand-bill form by several, if not many, publishers. One of these hand-bills, issued by Johnson, Song Publisher , No. 7 N. 10th St., Phila., n.d., credits authorship to J. Cullen Bryant . In this last, as in certain other printings, the figure 300,000 becomes 600,000." RARE. First Edition.
